Work. The Musical
Is a new musical set in an early 2000s General Electric Capital office that examines the ways in which our current system of corporate capitalism (ushered in by GE CEO Jack Welch in the 1980s) is not ideal for the vast majority of workers (let alone people), and how these issues intersect with social factors such as generational wealth, gender, and age.
The plot follows Opal Conover's process of confronting her own ideas about merit in the workplace when she is forced to lean on the young new hire Scott Jenkins after her inaction caused her hardworking coworker, Abby Durant, to be fired.
The show is both impactful and high energy, and because of the small cast size, all of the characters are complex and fleshed out.
In its original form, it has a runtime of just under an hour and thirty minutes in one act, but I plan to augment it to be ~ 2 hours. Included are a couple of songs from the show, recorded during its debut performance at the Boston Center for the Arts, Plaza Theatre, May 4th 2025.
